Townshend Landscape Architects was founded by Robert Townshend in 1988. Today we are a studio of Landscape Architects based in Central London, with an established reputation for delivering in high quality public realm schemes across a wide range of scales, both domestic and Internationally.
We are passionate about both design and integration, working closely in a studio environment to create places that are unique, memorable and long lasting. We firmly believe in working as part of a collaborative process through which we can shape the public realm to create lively environments that contribute to people's health, happiness and wellbeing.
Community Investment
TLA are committed to investing in local community projects. Currently we are closely involved in working with Global Generation, an educational charity, which works together with local children and young people, businesses, residents and families in Camden, Islington and Southwark to create healthy, integrated and environmentally responsible communities.
We have been working with Global Generation since the early days at the King's Cross development for their Skip Garden, an urban oasis with a twist - a portable garden that moves to different locations on the King's Cross site as and when land is sold and built on.
More recently we have been involved in the initial concept ideas and start-up initiative for the Paper Garden at Canada Water, part of the Canada Water Masterplan development with British Land. The Paper Garden is a 'collaborative seedbed in which to nurture creativity and community'. Based in what was the Daily Mail Printworks, ideas grown in the Paper Garden will help inform parts of the public realm as part of the redevelopment proposals. Robert Townshend and Gary Alden have provided early design support in helping Global Generation develop their concept. Gary has been involved in some of the community days working with local school children.
Robert Townshend is on the Global Generation Board of Trustees providing mentorship and strategic guidance.
Granary Square Triptych
A triptych of oil paintings by artist Trevor Burgess has been commissioned by Robert Townshend and installed at the TLA studio. This latest commission reflects the practice's ongoing support of the Arts.
The paintings capture the essence of Granary Square, one of the new public spaces designed by Townshend Landscape Architects at King's Cross Central. The artist says "I wanted the paintings to transmit the energy and vivacity of the many different people who enjoy Granary Square."
