The Stage covers a 2.5-acre site within the London Borough of Hackney, close to Norton Folgate and includes listed buildings both on and adjacent to it, contributing to its unique character that is defined by both history and culture. The site includes the remains of London’s second Elizabethan playhouse, the Curtain Theatre. The remains date from 1577 and it is believed the stage was used for Shakespearean plays during the playwright’s heyday and where both Romeo and Juliet and Henry V were first performed.
The scheme is mixed-use with office, retail, restaurants within the new commercial buildings and restored Victorian viaducts; and apartments and a health club in a 38-storey residential tower.
The landscape design included a new public piazza, roof terraces, green roofs and a new public open space with cafe and dedicated area for children’s play on the disused railway viaduct.
The buildings, designed by Perkins + Will, are surrounded by surface finishes in soft earth colours to reinforce the unique character and history of the development. They enclose a central piazza. The piazza creates a space for gatherings and performances in front of the new visitor centre housing the archaeology remains. An array of planters around the perimeter will soften the space.
The practice worked on the project from the masterplan and planning through to the delivery on site. Phase One, the Viaduct, is opened in Summer 2023, followed by the courtyard in 2024.
