St Johns Innovation Park

Client:
St John’s College, University of Cambridge, Breakthrough Properties (Vitrum Building)
Location:
City of Cambridge
St Johns Innovation Park is an integral part of the North Cambridge research and development cluster. It is home to R&D, technology and life science companies. Townshend Landscape Architects have been working alongside Sheppard Robson Architects to develop a vision for the campus and detailed proposals for the new Dirac Building and transport hub. The practice is also developing the proposals for the new Vitrum Life Sciences Building at the southeast corner of the site alongside Henning Larsen and Feilden and Mawson Architects for Breakthrough Properties.
The St Johns Innovation Park is an opportunity to consider how the site can evolve in the future to adapt to future work patterns and tenant requirements. The approach taken within the landscape has been to consider the existing site and to incorporate key features and assets such as existing tree planting into the masterplan to enhance the landscape character and biodiversity of the site.
The Dirac Building and transport hub will both open onto a new square which will become the focal point of the site with a variety of events and activities taking place. The square is complemented by smaller landscape spaces with an emphasis on enhancing biodiversity across the site and incorporating a series of rain gardens as part of the sustainable urban drainage design.
Opening in 2026, the Vitrum building will provide communal amenity, office and lab spaces. The entrance to the building is set back from the site entrance to create an entrance space with seating and a focal tree.
Amenity terraces on the Vitrum and Dirac building will offer additional amenity space for occupiers.
