Oxford Radcliffe Observatory Quarter

Client:
Oxford University Estates Directorate
Location:
City of Oxford
The Mathematical Institute lies within the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter (ROQ), which is located on the old Radcliffe Infirmary Hospital site beside the Grade I listed Radcliffe Observatory, north of Oxford City Centre. The site was occupied by the NHS until 2007, when the hospital closed, and the area was taken over by Oxford University to be developed as a new site for the University’s departmental buildings.
The Design
Townshend Landscape Architects were appointed as Landscape Architects to develop the landscape proposals for the Mathematical Institute public realm for the Rafael Vinoly Architects design in 2009. The landscape proposals include entrance spaces to the building, courtyards and a pedestrian boulevard.
The scheme received planning consent in 2010 and was completed in September 2013.
