Northcliffe House

Client:
DWS Alternatives Global Limited
Location:
City of London
Located in the heart of the City, the tiered roof terraces at Northcliffe House are designed to complement the new high-tech refurbishment of offices of this whole block development. The building was formerly the Daily Mail newspaper headquarters.
The Design
The roof terrace designs cover levels 5, 6 and 7, with additional intensive green roofs on the upper levels. Townshend Landscape Architects were asked to prepare a landscape strategy document for planning submission, as part of a detailed planning application.
Due to weight over the existing structure the terraces were re-paved with raised planters, providing soil depth, grouped around niche useable spaces, fixed bench seating or moveable seating in places, and lush, attractive planting. The spatial arrangement, or rooms, cover a range of uses from relaxation, individual working, small meeting ‘rooms’ and larger formal meeting areas.
In addition, a big flexible open space with tiered south-facing bench seating on level 7 allows the opportunity for events, yoga, screen shows, and parties. Judicious screen planting was incorporated for privacy, channelling views, and improving the microclimate, along with a variety of flowering plants that turn these roof spaces into attractive verdant gardens, all to complement the newly refurbished interiors.
At ground floor level, renewed pavements will complement the new retail provision.
