London Wall Place is a commercial office scheme situated north of London Wall, close to Moorgate in the City of London. The development comprises ground level gardens and extensive, predominantly south facing roof terraces.
The Design
The landscape proposals for the terraces provide a rich tapestry of varied spaces to accommodate different user requirements over 9 different levels, including an outdoor gym. Each terrace is designed to enhance the existing environment quality, grow the local wildlife habitats, increase biodiversity and improve the visual amenity for users of the building. The terraces comprise 5 categories: ‘The Formal Garden’, with evergreen structure planting, white flowering plant mixes, judiciously placed specimen shrubs and seasonal bulbs; ‘The Prairie Garden’ has more informal plantings using grasses, herbaceous flowering species that focus on colour and texture, extra wildlife habitats and a prolonged flowering season; ‘The Cottage Gardens’ have a vibrant colour mix of flowering trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants, including edible species; ‘The Shade Gardens’ contain a luminous palette of white flowering plants that focus on shade enlivenment and biodiversity; and ‘Green and Brown Roofs’, designed purely to enhance wildlife and biodiversity.
Raised planters in GRP with timber tops, or wrapped timber benches, along with free-standing furniture have been carefully placed in subspaces formed by planting beds to maximise the microclimate, each framed by taller plants. Spaces are further defined using the floor layer in a combination of hardwood timber, composite decking or natural multi-blue granite stone. Some terraces have lawn areas for user relaxation, or larger paved event areas, with opportunities for focal art pieces in several places where paths turn or cross.
