Kidbrooke Village

Client:
The Berkeley Group Holdings PLC
Location:
Kidbrooke, London
Kidbrooke Village is situated in South-East London and occupies the site of the former Ferrier Housing Estate that was originally constructed between 1968 and 1972 on the site of an old RAF airfield. It was considered one of the worst and most notorious estates in the country and the Kidbrooke Regeneration Project replaces it with a new community development.
The Design
Kidbrooke Village provides some 4,400 new homes set on either side of a new 100ha park. Townshend Landscape Architects developed the design of the ‘Hub’, a village centre, and several new residential blocks with semi-private first floor level podium gardens set internally within each block, along with the surrounding streetscape. The village Hub lies close to Kidbrooke railway station towards the north of the site. This includes a new public square surrounded by retail and cafes. The practice also developed designs and refurbishments for the adjacent Kidbrooke Park with an attenuation pond teeming with wildlife.
In addition, Townshend Landscape Architects were commissioned to develop a landscape strategy for the site, monitoring the overall design quality for the whole site and to deliver several phases. In order to achieve this the practice was involved in extensive consultation with a wide range of design bodies then overseeing the work of a series of participating practices.
