30, South Colonnade

Client:
Quadrant Estates
Location:
London Borough of Tower Hamlets
30 South Colonnade is located in the heart of Canary Wharf, within the North and Middle Dock. It is a refurbishment scheme of an original high-rise building, with the addition of a new roof level, as well as additional garden terraces at levels 12 and 14, and balconies with planting on all levels, 1 through 11.
The Design
The design aim was to create high-quality usable external spaces with attractive lush gardens for office workers, incorporating high-tech facilities in the outdoor rooms that offer spaces for events, meetings, and relaxation areas.
The design concept draws on the verticality and geometry of the building to unify and tie in the landscape design, aligning the built form through both hard and soft landscape elements. At level 14, the top and main roof terrace space, the continuity of the architectural lines is applied using a wrapping effect, taking the materiality of the building into surface finishes in stone and timber as stripes across the floor. .
This is in turn picked up in the planter and seating designs which are judiciously arranged to provide niche pocket spaces, or rooms, for relaxation, individual working, small meetings and larger formal meetings. In addition, a larger flexible open space provides an opportunity for a variety of events, such as yoga, projection screening, and parties, with the inclusion of a fixed outdoor side bar.
Throughout, the bench seating, high-tech USB and electric points, and a variety of different table designs allow for easy outdoor working.
